Mathematics

At Clayton North Primary School, our Mathematics program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and informed by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0. We aim to develop students’ mathematical knowledge, skills and confidence, supporting them to become capable and independent learners.

Our approach reflects the VTLM 2.0 through explicit teaching, carefully sequenced learning, guided practice and opportunities for students to apply and extend their learning independently. Teachers provide clear explanations and model mathematical concepts and processes before supporting students to practise and apply new learning.

Students are provided with regular opportunities to respond and demonstrate their understanding through questioning, discussion, practice and problem-solving. Teachers use ongoing checking for understanding and formative assessment to identify student learning needs, address misconceptions, provide feedback and adjust instruction accordingly.

Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability

Students develop their mathematical knowledge across the six areas of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. They learn key concepts and skills, make connections between different areas of Mathematics and apply their learning to meaningful and practical situations.

Understanding, Fluency, Reasoning and Problem-solving

Students develop their ability to use Mathematics flexibly and thoughtfully. They build accuracy and fluency, explain and justify their thinking, select appropriate strategies and apply their knowledge to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar situations.

Daily Reviews

Daily Reviews provide regular opportunities to revisit previously taught knowledge and skills through spaced and interleaved practice. This helps students consolidate and retain important learning, strengthen recall and build on what they already know.
