EAL Program

At Clayton North Primary School, we value and celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of our school community. Our English as an Additional Language (EAL) program supports students who are learning English in addition to their first language, helping them to develop the language skills needed to participate confidently and successfully in all areas of school life.

EAL support is delivered through a combination of targeted small-group instruction and in-class support, depending on students’ individual learning needs. Working closely with classroom teachers, our EAL teacher provides explicit teaching of the English language skills and vocabulary required for students to access the curriculum and engage successfully in classroom learning. Learning experiences are designed to strengthen students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while building confidence in using English for a range of social and academic purposes.

Our school is also supported by a Multicultural Education Aide (MEA), who works closely with students, families and staff to strengthen communication and support student engagement and wellbeing. The MEA helps families access information about school programs and processes, supports communication between home and school where needed, and assists students to successfully navigate their learning environment.

Through ongoing assessment and collaboration between teachers, EAL support is tailored to students’ stages of English language development. This ensures that students receive the appropriate level of support while participating fully in classroom learning and continuing to value and maintain their home language and cultural identity.
